There are several different causes of primary insomnia, including Circadian rhythm abnormalities, a misperception of the state of sleep, medical conditions, and behavioral factors. In this article, we will examine the most common causes, as well as possible treatment options. In addition to this basic information, there are also several important complications associated with primary insomnia. Listed below are some of these complications. If your condition is persistent, see a doctor to determine whether medical treatment is necessary.

Sleep state misperception

A poorly understood cause of insomnia is a condition known as sleep state misperception, which affects about 5% of the population. People who suffer from sleep state misperception have elevated awareness of their surroundings when they are lying down, and do not remember much of what they thought while they slept. Insomnia is a common problem for people with mental health issues, such as depression or chronic stress, but they may not understand how to manage their emotions.

Insomnia can be classified into two categories: psychophysiological and idiopathic. Idiopathic insomnia is marked by an inability to fall asleep or stay asleep and results in poor daytime functioning. Psychophysiological insomnia, by contrast, results from learned sleep-preventing associations or increased tension. People with sleep state misperception report sleeping difficulties, but objective measures show normal sleep duration and latency.

Circadian rhythm abnormalities

Circadian rhythm disorders are irregularities in your sleep cycle that disrupt the body's internal clock. The 24-hour cycle helps regulate hormones and cell regeneration. Circadian rhythm disorders may be caused by a number of factors, including medications, time zone changes, and changes in your daily routine. Approximately 60 million Americans experience poor sleep quality or insomnia, and 40 million of those meet the diagnostic criteria for a sleep disorder. Regardless of the cause, proper sleep is essential for the health of the mind and body.

A disorder in the circadian cycle can cause primary insomnia. Several treatments can be effective in addressing the problem. The most common treatment involves using a sleep diary and a wristwatch-like device that records wake and sleep activities. Various sleep studies may also be conducted, including daytime and overnight sleep studies, and are customized to the individual's circadian rhythm. Other tests can include blood pressure and melatonin levels.

Medical conditions

While the symptoms of primary insomnia may be mild and temporary, it may also be a sign of other medical conditions. These include heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Chronic pain also may prevent a person from sleeping, as can a thyroid disorder or overactive thyroid. Certain disorders, such as sleep apnea, can also interfere with sleep. Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is another cause of primary insomnia. Patients with RLSS often experience an irresistible urge to move during sleep.

Many people suffer from intermittent or chronic insomnia. While the condition is temporary, if it persists over a long period of time, medical treatment can be beneficial. Sometimes, stress or tension can aggravate a person's insomnia. If left untreated, insomnia can lead to a host of other issues, including poor quality of life, depression, and even a comorbid medical condition. Medical conditions that cause primary insomnia include:

Behavioral factors

Behavioral factors may influence sleep in both healthy and ill individuals. In this study, participants completed questionnaires about their anxiety and depression levels, sleep-related cognitions, and sleep hygiene practices. The results were similar for both groups, suggesting that psychological factors may influence sleep. However, it is unclear whether these factors influence insomnia in healthy individuals. Further studies are needed to identify possible links between the behavioral factors of sleep and other health problems.

Sleep difficulties are a costly public health concern. The causes of primary insomnia are not fully understood, but treatment approaches can address these perpetuating factors. However, many people are reluctant to use hypnotic medications as long-term solutions. In addition to using pharmaceutical medications, behavioral treatments are available to address insomnia. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has identified nonmedication interventions for chronic primary insomnia. These include hypnotic medications and cognitive therapies.
